September 21, 2011. Troy Davis is executed by the state of Georgia for the murder of Mark MacPhail in 1989. Although the murder weapon was never recovered and several eye-witnesses testified that a different man was responsible, police claimed ballistic evidence presented at trial linked bullets from the scene to those at another same-night shooting in which Davis was charged. He was convicted of murder, and was sentenced to death.
